Daily Prayers for the Peters

Dear SRCS Family,

If you are like my family, we have been deeply impacted by the events surrounding the Peters family this past week. I have found my self often feeling completely helpless and I have been reminded through scripture of the absolute need to pray. Our God is the creator of the heavens and the earth, the King of King, Lord of Lords and I know He is the lover of all our souls.

I met with the entire 6th grade this morning and we agreed to restart the 5th grade blog so that we can post daily prayers. A student each day will write a prayer and the blog will also be a place where students can post words of encouragement and support.

Also, I am praying that if somehow, Madison has an opportunity to get online, she will be led, through the Holy Spirit's prompting, to check out the blog and read information on how to get in contact with authorities and her Mom, Kari.

If there's any website that Madison has visited more often, it is this blog. She has literally been on 500 to 1000 times in the past year and I am hoping she will check out the blog again, through habit.

Madison we miss you and your sister dearly. We are praying unceasingly for your return. You are loved and we trust, through God's help, we will see you again soon. I'll even give you a hug!

Mr. Goh

The final blog entry!

As a final blog activity, I want you to comment on the blog by thanking the members of your class.  I encourage you to say something meaningful to all 18 of your classmates.  If you see a "spiritual gift" in someone, let them know and encourage them.

There should be no one in the class without multiple comments.  Make sure that happens.

The Battle at Kruger

Here is the video we watched this morning with the battle between the lions and the wildebeest.  Imagine the lions and crocodile representing temptation and sin.  Imagine the wildebeests being us.  You are the baby.

What a powerful message of how we need the support of others to help us live our lives for Jesus

The Gospel in 4 Minutes

I was thinking, as we finish off this year, that it would be of cardinal importance to make sure that everyone of you were presented the gospel.  My prayer, as your teacher, is that our entire class would know Jesus as their Lord and Savior and have life in His name.  Then, my hope is that you would take this "good news" and share it with the world.

Here is the G.O.S.P.E.L. presented and explained in 4 minutes.  It's GOOD stuff!

Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.

1 Thessalonians 5:11

As we approach the final week of school, let's encourage one another and build each other up.  I know there are many of us who are struggling to finish this year strong.  By ourselves, we are weak, but together, we are strong.  And, remeber, we can do all things through Christ who gives us strength!

Leave a comment to encourage one another.  This might get us to 15,000 pageviews too!

Sound of Music - Fact or Fiction

It's been a while...

Hi 5th Grade,

Great job on the Iowa tests!  You're all doing amazing.  I can't tell you how excited I am of this field trip next week.  I am praying that it will be life changing and that you will have a new perspective on the needs of the poor.  I know some of you might be anxious about the fast.  While it may be tough, we will be doing it together and I have lots of fun activities planned for Friday night to get your mind off your hunger pangs.  But, feeling the hunger will hopefully help you empathize with the plight of so many in our country.

We will be watching the video below Friday morning (next week).  I just watched it and I learned so much and was so inspired.

Have a good night.  Get those permission forms in!

Reminders for tomorrow's field trip

Hi  5th Grade,
Aren't you all super excited about tomorrow's field trip.  Here are some answers to the FAQs.

When do we need to arrive at school?  no later than 7 a.m.

When will we return to school?  We should be back to school between 4:30 to 5:00.  Please make sure you make arrangments to be picked up at school at that time.

How should we dress?  I am expecting you all to be in formal business attire.  While a tie is not necessary for boys, I encourage you to dress your best, nonetheless.  Girls, you should be in a dress or skirt or something else that you consider appropriate for business.

Do I need to bring any money?
No.  Everything will be provided for you on the trip.  But, if you want to pack a "healthy" snack, please do so.  It looks like only junk food (e.g. McDonalds will be served).

Can I bring electronics on the trip?  No.  If you want to bring a cell phone, however, you can bring one if absolutely necessary.  I will only allow you to use it when you are on the bus coming home 30 minutes out to tell your parents you are almost home.

Can I bring a camera?  No.  I will take all pictures.  I don't want you to be distracted during the day.  I'm a GREAT photographer!!!  Don't worry.

Can we bring Caddie Woodlawn to read on the bus?  YES!!!

Can we bring an AR book?  YES!!!

JT...no electronics!  Please don't cry.

Can I bring something else to read?  YES!!!

Can I practice my recorder on the bus?  NO!!!

Can we bring a blanket/pillow on the bus?  NO!!!

Is this an awesome trip?  YES

Are we going to have a great time?  YES

Identify the speaker, who is being spoken to and what is happening in the novel when it is being said

Penderwick Chocolate-Chip Cookie Bake-Off Results!

Thank you to all the participants of the 1st Annual Penderwick Chocolate-Chip Cookie Bake-Off (PC3BO)!  It was lots of fun and I hope you enjoyed sampling lots and lots of cookies this morning.  Despite there being winners and losers, aren't we all winners?  We all were able to eat yummy cookies!!!

How did I come up with the results?  With the help of Mrs. Goh (please thank her the next time you see her...nothing happens in our home without her), we inputted every one of the over 350+ scores into MS Excel.  Then, we took out the highest and lowest scores from each category for each cookie (aka the "outliers").  Then I took the average (mean) for each category.  Then, I took the mean of each cookie's scores to come up with an overall score out of 100.

First, the honorable mentions...
These cookies didn't place in the top 3 but had the highest scores in individual categories (first to third place cookies were excluded).

MOST BEAUTIFUL COOKIE - Joshua B (Cookie #3)
MOST DELICIOUS COOKIE - Joshua V (Cookie #5)
COOKIE WITH BEST TEXTURE - Madison W (Cookie #12)

Now...for the winners of the 1st Annual PC3BO

1.  Madison Peters (Cookie #8) - Overall Score = 86.1
2.  Rachel Saint (Cookie #2) - Overall Score = 82.6
3.  Addison Vaughn (Cookie #13) - Overall Score = 82.1

The overall results in cookie order.
Apppearance/Taste/Texture = Overall Score

Cookie #1 (JT) - 74.2/79.7/74.47=76.2

Cookie #2 (Rachel) - 83.1/81.7/82.9 = 82.6
SECOND PLACE!

Cookie #3 (Josh B) - 83.1/71.8/77.7 = 77.5
MOST BEAUTIFUL!

Cookie #4 (Jane) - 76.5/78.9/81.0 = 78.8

Cookie #5 (Josh V) - 82.4/81.9/75.9 = 80.1
MOST DELICIOUS!

Cookie #6 (Katelyn) - 74.9/77.8/76.6 = 76.4

Cookie #7 (Mrs. Goh/Naomi/Taylor) - 73.5/72.4/79.4 = 75.1

Cookie #8 (Madison P) - 87.1/85.0/86.3 = 86.1
FIRST PLACE!

Cookie #9 (Anna) - 83.3/79.5/79.7 = 80.9

Cookie #10 (Alexis) - 76.3/65.6/73.3 = 71.7

Cookie #11 (Cody) - 75.4/72.0/71.6 = 73.0

Cookie #12 (Madison W) - 78.7/69.9/85.5 = 78.0
BEST TEXTURE

Cookie #13 (Addison) - 84.4/80.5/81.5 = 82.1
THIRD PLACE!

Thank you Mrs. Kelso for taking and sending these yummy pictures to me!

Thank you to all the parents who came to taste test too!

Wycliffe Bible Translators Link and Video

Today in class we talked about Wycliffe Bible Translators.  If you feel like you have the God-given gift of language, perhaps you might want to love God one day by translating the Bible to unreached people in the remotest parts of the world.  As I explained in class, a guy from Wycliffe came to the school I was teaching at, in Toronto, and did a langugage demonstration.  What an amazing talent used for the gospel!

Penderwick Bonus Assignment

To celebrate the upcoming milestone of 10,000 pageviews of our blog, I am posting a Penderwicks bonus assignment.  This assignment will be due the day of our Penderwicks Unit Test and be worth a 2% bonus on the test - provided it is done well.

Create a "decorated" poster that lists all the rules, regulations and Codes of Conudct of the Penderwick sisters.

"decorated" simply means you have put thought into the posters presentation and it is believable that this would be posted in one of the girl's rooms or available for reference at a MOPS or MOOPS meeting!
