Sushi Video

You all seemed to enjoy our "sushi" class today.  I hope this gave you an opportunity to "taste" a new culture!  Below is a video of how to make your own sushi roll.  In the rolls we made today, we had peeled cucumber, carrots (slightly boiled to soften) and cooked salmon.  Seaweed, rice, vegetables and fish would have been a very normal meal for the families in The Big Wave. The sauce was "sushi" soya sauce and wasabi.

LAST DAY TO BRING IN ORPHANAGE DONATIONS!

Hi 5th Grade,

Tomorrow is the LAST day to get in your children's clothes and diaper rash cream. Go shopping and buy your cute kid's outfits.

Also, our goal is to raise $500.  Please bring in a donation that we can send with Emily to China.  She will use this money to buy diapers and toys.  We need everyone to participate.  Even if it's just a few dollars, you are making a difference!

I am looking forward to seeing how God leads you to give tonight.

See you tomorrow!

Sqworl Introduced

Hi 5th Grade,

Today in Social Studies, I introduced to you the need for us to be able to determine whether a website has educational value.  I googled "Crossing the Red Sea" and included some of the links on my sqworl.  A sqworl is a web resource where you can collect links/bookmarks and present them in a graphical way.

http://sqworl.com/l6rkgj

BONUS:  Take a look at the 6 links on the sqworl and try to determine for yourself whether or not these are websites that would be useful for a research project.  Tell me why you have this opinion.

Have a great weekend!

Reflection on the Red Sea account in Exodus

As mentioned earlier, the parting of the Red Sea account in Exodus is one of my favorites.  Each time I read the account in Exodus, however, I am always disturbed at the faithless nature of the Israelite people.  Despite God's constant revealing of himself through the cloud and the pillar of fire, despite the countless miraculous acts, the Israelites continue to be a complaining and faithless nation.

Please comment on how you are similar and/or dissimilar from the Israelites.  What personal life lessons can you learn from the parting of the Red Sea?

Also, respond to another classmates' comments and let them know your thoughts.

Why are we playing scrabble in class?

It seemed like you all really enjoyed playing scrabble today in class.  Below are some of the benefits of playing scrabble in school.

  • It increases the vocabulary of a person. Even if you are learning a new language, scrabble greatly helps in picking up many new words and builds a great vocabulary.

  • It teaches spelling skills to children.

  • It enhances the mathematical skills in a person and shows us how adding one new letter can change a word or the entire meaning of a word.

  • It helps develop critical thinking in a person and teaches problem solving skills

  • It helps in developing an improved memory and a sharper brain.

  • It also promotes healthy and optimal brain functioning in the elderly people, and prevents the onset of degenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s or any other mental disorders.

  • Playing this game regularly leads to improved concentration

  • Playing scrabble regularly aids in boosting the intelligence.
  •

  • This game prepares the brain for long term storage, retention and retrieval of information.

  • Scrabble involves the left-hemisphere of the brain and therefore, it stimulates the development and functioning of brain in children
