Jesus You Are...

My favorite psalm

Hi 5th Grade,

I love Psalm 51.  It has been a Psalm that I have often meditated on and is an amazing reminder of God's forgiveness of my sin.

But, I don't know if this can be considered my "favorite."  It's hard to call something a "favorite" when it is a reminder of how sinful I really am!  Nonetheless, understanding the story of David (2 Samuel 12:1-23) and his response of saying sorry to God through Psalm 51 is very powerful.

The part I really like in this Psalm is that it isn't just about David saying sorry.  It is about his promise to then tell others to turn back to God in verse 13.

Create in me a pure heart, O God,
and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me from your presence
or take your Holy Spirit from me.
Restore to me the joy of your salvation
and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.
Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
so that sinners will turn back to you.
Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,
you who are God my Savior,
and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
Open my lips, Lord,
and my mouth will declare your praise.
You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;
    a broken and contrite heart
    you, God, will not despise.

Word problems related to elapsed time

Today in math class we learned how to solve problems related to elapsed time.  Even though time is something we need to deal with everyday, calculating elapsed time mathematically can sometimes be tricky because seconds, minutes and hours are based on a numbering system based of 60 vs more common numbers like 10s and 100s.

Try these and see how you do.

Maureen started her homework at 7.20 p.m. She finished it at 8.05 p.m. How long did she take to do her homework? min

A chess game started at 10.20 a.m. and ended at 12.30 p.m. How long did the game last?

How to create an mp3 file in audacity

Thank you all for trying tonight to get this to work on your home computers.

Here are the instructions.

1.  Go to this link:

3.  Install the program.

4.  Then, in AUDACITY, when you are ready to save your project as an mp3, you go to File, Export...

5.  Choose a location to save, create a file name and then under "Save as type:" choose MP3

6.  That's it.

NOTE:  You don't need to create an mp3 file until the end (unless you want to be sharing your mp3 file with other members of your group).  But, making your project into a mp3 is very important because it is a format that can be shared with others.

If you are VERY confused, I will show you tomorrow.  Good night.

Mr. Goh's prayer for the Jekabsons

Dear Lord,

Thank you so much for blessing the Jekabson family with a new son.  Thank you for guiding Georgia and Jeff to this opportunity and opening so many doors to make this even possible.  I pray for a safe and easy flight home. I pray for Ian's transition to life in America and with his new family.

Thank you also for how this adoption has given us all a chance to pray more and get involved.  I pray that the 5th grade would be able to know, through their giving, that even as young people, they can make a difference for Christ.

In Jesus Name,
Amen

Jackie Pullinger

Hi Class,

This morning gave me encouragement that Monday's can be productive days of learning!  Thank you for your efforts to stay attentive and focussed.  I want to continue focussing on the positive of each day!

Below is a link to another biography that I would highly recommend.  It is the story about a woman named Jackie Pullinger.  We have talked about her in class already but in case your forgot, she is the reason I went to Hong Kong back in 1995.  I was watching a show on T.V. where her life was the focus.  After watching, I knew God was calling me overseas to Asia!

Anyway, I know her (even though she probably wouldn't remember me) and have served with her drug ministry in Hong Kong.  For one night, I prayed over a man going through the first night of drug withdrawal...it was quite the experience as he cried and screamed.  Her ministry is incredible because it is clear that the Holy Spirit is working to change the live of drug addicts.

Here is the link.  Enjoy!

Re: Heroes of the Faith BIG project

Hi 5th Grade,

I am so excited about how God put this idea about our BIG project on my mind and heart.  I want this to become more than a school thing; I want it to be something that will encourage you personally and inspire other to follow Christ.  On a regular basis I will be posting biographies of famous Heroes of the faith.  Read them and start considering who you might want to choose.  The person you choose may be historical or modern.  I just want you to to consider the following criteria.

1)  It is someone you really want to learn about
2)  It is someone who will challenge you in your walk with Christ
3)  It is someone who will inspire the school community (and beyond) to follow Christ

Today, I am including a biography of one of my famous missionaries named Hudson Taylor.  I love his story and his sacrifice and we actually named our daughter Taylor after him.  I know...I named my daughter after a man!!!  But, his life is so inspirational that we wanted that the legacy of his name to be who she will become.

Here it is...

J. Hudson Taylor - Founder of the China Inland Mission

J. Hudson Taylor
Source: Wikipedia
James Hudson Taylor(1832-1905), missionary to China
Taylor was born in Yorkshire, England in 1832. After a brief period of teenage skepticism, he came to Christ by reading a Christian tract in his father's apothecary store. A few months after his conversion, he consecrated himself wholly to the Lord's work. He sensed the Lord was calling him to China, and he began studying medicine and lived on as little as possible, trusting God for his every provision.
In 1853, the twenty-one-year-old Taylor sailed for China as an agent of a new mission society. He arrived in Shanghai the next spring and immediately began learning Chinese. Funds from home rarely arrived, but Taylor was determined to rely upon God for his every need, and he never appealed for money to his friends in England. Repeatedly he later told others, "Depend upon it. God's work, done in God's way, will never lack for supplies." In those days, foreigners were not allowed into China's interior; they only were allowed in five Chinese ports. Hudson Taylor, however, was burdened for those Chinese millions who had never heard of Christ. Ignoring the political restrictions, he traveled along the inland canals preaching the gospel.
In 1858 he married Marie Dyer, an English orphan who was working in a school for Chinese girls in Ningpo. By 1860, foreigners were able to legally travel anywhere in China, missionaries were allowed, and the Chinese were permitted to convert to Christianity. At a time when tremendous opportunities were opening up in China, ill health forced Taylor, with his wife and small daughter, to return to England. What seemed at first to be a setback in his mission work turned out to be a step forward. While in England recovering his health, Taylor was able to complete his medical studies. He revised a Chinese New Testament and organized the China Inland Mission.
Twenty-two people accompanied Taylor back to China in 1866. The sufferings and hardships multiplied: Taylor's daughter died from water on the brain; the family was almost killed in the Yang Chow Riot of 1868; Maria, Taylor's first wife, died in childbirth; his second wife died of cancer; sickness and ill health were frequent. Yet, the China Inland Mission continued its work of reaching China's millions for Christ. By 1895 the Mission had 641 missionaries plus 462 Chinese helpers at 260 stations. Under Hudson Taylor's leadership, C.I.M. had supplied over half of the Protestant missionary force in China. During the Boxer Rebellion of 1900, 56 of these missionaries were martyred, and hundreds of Chinese Christians were killed. The missionary work did not slack, however, and the number of missionaries quadrupled in the coming decades.
Chinese Christians proved remarkably resilient under Communism. They did not die out but multiplied many-fold in one of the greatest expansions in church history.

Chapel Reflections - The Parable of the Sower

Hi 5th grade,
Some wonderful reflections re: this morning's chapel presentation!  Please comment on as many of your classmate's reflections as you can.  See you tomorrow.

Madison P
I am also like the seed in the good soil because sometimes I grow like crazy but then I get distracted by other things.

Rachel
I think that I am most like the seed in the rocky ground.  I come to God's word quickly, but I don't have any "roots" so I wither away.

Alexis
I am like the seed planted in the shallow soil.  I have great opportunities, and I take them, but I don't follow through.

Zac B
I am like the seed on the rocky path.  I sometimes stumble with God and my life.

Noah
I'm like the seed that grows up really fast, but I went back down.  I get distracted with sports, but know I'm recovering.  My Dad is like the seed in the rich soil.  He preaches every Sunday to the needy.  When they need help, he's there.

Katelyn
I am most like the seed in the shallow soil.  I don't stay with that that leads to God.

Cody
My brother Richie is an evil seed and a kid that makes bad choices with his life.

Zach J
I am like the seed in the vines.  I get distracted by chores and my games.

Josh V
I am the seed in the shallow soil.  My Dad is in the soil of goodness.

Madison W
I think I am like the seed on shallow soil.  When I have a good day and I have been with God, I feel joyful and the seed in my heart springs up.  When I have bad days and I am not in contact with God, I feel lonely and mad and the seed in my heart withers.

Michael
The path and the birds came and ate it up.  Though seeing, they do not see.  They hear but they do not hear or understand.

Addison
I think I'm like the seed that at first sprouts but then dies because when I learn about God I love it.  Then, I get distracted and forget about it.

Anna
I am like the seed of thorns because I sin and God still forgives me.

Sam
I am like the one that fell in thorns because when I struggle I just give up.

Jane
I think I am most like the seed that sprouted up immediately but was scorched by the sun and withered.  Sometimes in my life I try to be more like God and listen to him and I sprout up like a seed.  But sometimes, I will get distracted mostly by getting good grades in school and basing my life on that and I wither and die.

JT
In the parable of the sower, I am like the seed that fell on the thorns.

Jane's Prayer for the Jekabsons

Dear Lord,

I pray for the Jekabsons and Ian's trip back here and they would be safe in China.  Please help Ian to adjust to his new home with the Jekabson and that Mr. and Mrs. Jekabsons would not be stressed and have a great time in China.  I also pray that Sarah, Emily and Ian would not be tired from the jetlag and they would be awake and happy when they get back.

Amen

A book recommendation...

Hi 5th grade,

Today we talked about Pastor Samuel Lamb.  I met him in person in 1995 on a basketball mission trip.  My team had the chance to attend one of his services and then spent an hour after the service talking to him and asking him questions.  What an amazing example of a humble man; what an amazing example of a man who loves God.

Here is the blurb from a book I found about his life...

You cannot understand China without meeting heroes like Samuel Lamb! In an age when secularism and materialism numb the human spirit, China's amazing Christians demonstrate the power of living faith. In 1950 China's Christians numbered about a million. Today, estimates range between 30 and 70 million! How did this body of believers grow so rapidly under atheism and materialism? Bold as a Lamb is the true story of Pastor Samuel Lamb. Imprisoned for more than twenty years for preaching the Gospel, he became the beloved secret pastor to hundreds of fellow inmates. After his release in 1978, he built a phenomenal 'house church' congregation of more than a thousand. Soon, however, he became the special target of those determined to destroy the mushrooming house church movement in China. His church was closed and his ministry tools were confiscated. Yet this man remains undaunted, standing boldly -- and with spiritual grace, against fierce opposition. This is the fascinating, eye-opening account of one of China's best-known pastors, his dauntless congregation, and how they found joy and optimism in the face of relentless persecution.

If it sounds appealing to you, below is the link to the amazon.com page where you can purchase it.

October Monthly Poem

A few of you have asked for me to post the monthly poem on the blog.  Just remember that if something is included on the Friday Newsletter, it is also on the blog.  Therefore, find the newsletter and you have the information you are looking for.

Anyway, here it is...

The Lamplighter
by Robert Louis Stevenson

My tea is nearly ready and the sun has left the sky.
It's time to take the window to see Leerie going by;
For every night at teatime and before you take your seat,
With lantern and with ladder he comes posting up the street.

Now Tom would be a driver and Maria go to sea,
And my papa's a banker and as rich as he can be;
But I, when I am stronger and can choose what I'm to do,
O Leerie, I'll go round at night and light the lamps with you!

For we are very lucky, with a lamp before the door,
And Leerie stops to light it as he lights so many more;
And oh! before you hurry by with ladder and with light;
O Leerie, see a little child and nod to him to-night!

Alexis' prayer for the Jekabsons

Dear Lord,

Please help Ian to adapt to his new life with the Jekabsons.  Please help the whole family stay safe in China and help the letters arrive safely to the orphanage.

A touching video about Dad coming home from war

Hi 5th Grade,

Pastor Ray shared about this video during his sermon this morning.  I looked it up and it made me cry!  Really.  Maybe it's because I'm a Dad.  Maybe it's because I miss my parents and am only able to see them every couple of years.

Can't wait to see you all tomorrow morning!

How to write an equation

5th Grade,

Here is more information on how to write an equation.  Get good at this and you'll have a greater chance at success in middle and high school math.

http://www.mathgoodies.com/lessons/vol7/equations.html

Problem:   Jeanne has $17 in her piggy bank. How much money does she need to buy a game that costs $68? [IMAGE]
Solution:   Let x represent the amount of money Jeanne needs. Then the following equation can represent this problem:
17 + x = 68
We can subtract 17 from both sides of the equation to find the value of x.

68 - 17 = x
Answer:   x = 51, so Jeanne needs $51 to buy the game.
In the problem above, x is a variable. The symbols 17 + x = 68 form an algebraic equation. Let's look at some examples of writing algebraic equations.

Example 1:

Write each sentence as an algebraic equation.
Sentence Algebraic Equation
A number increased by nine is fifteen. y + 9 = 15
Twice a number is eighteen. 2n = 18
Four less than a number is twenty. x - 4 = 20
A number divided by six is eight.

Example 2: Write each sentence as an algebraic equation.

Sentence Algebraic Equation
Twice a number, decreased by twenty-nine, is seven. 2t - 29 = 7
Thirty-two is twice a number increased by eight. 32 = 2a + 8
The quotient of fifty and five more than a number is ten.
Twelve is sixteen less than four times a number. 12 = 4x - 16

Example 3: Write each sentence as an algebraic equation.

Sentence Algebraic Equation
Eleni is x years old. In thirteen years she will be twenty-four years old. x + 13 = 24
Each piece of candy costs 25 cents. The price of h pieces of candy is $2.00. 25h = 200 or
.25h = 2.00
Suzanne made a withdrawal of d dollars from her savings account. Her old balance was $350, and her new balance is $280. 350 - d = 280
A large pizza pie with 15 slices is shared among p students so that each student's share is 3 slices.

Summary:   An algebraic equation is an equation that includes one or more variables. In this lesson, we learned how to write a sentence as an algebraic equation.
